The 5W Sewing Profile "Who" Will Work in My Sewing Business?
Prior to the room-planning stage, step one 5W Sewing Profile "WHO" will work in your sewing business?
What you plan on sewing and where, will determine the number you will need to help with each project, consider this. It is impossible for two people to function in an area designed for one-sort of like too many cooks in the kitchen.
Instead of feeling creative, you will become frustrated from constantly bumping into each other or waiting for tools the other
person is using.
My Window Treatment shop was completely different than my first sewing room. The original space was a little corner
in the family room. However sufficient for the time; I could not have squeezed in another person.
When I incorporated window treatments into the business I had to think of a permanent space. Hence Patty's Window Treatment
Shop was created. It was a much bigger space, I could take on bigger jobs and have more that one person in the room.
For instance, if making pinch pleated drapes, it is beneficial to work with one other person. Drapes require exact measurement, in order for them to hang even, so one person
at each end of the cutting table will be more efficient.
You may also consider someone for hand hemming. My tip is hand hem will give you a professional look. In the beginning you may think this is an expense you can do without but my recommendation is to reconsider. It is the professional touches your clients will appreciate.
If your sewing business consists mostly of window treatments and mind you some of those jobs require
several widths of fabric, lined, per window; the job definitely requires more than one person.
Who will work in your sewing business?
When determing how many people will work in the sewing room, first you need some idea of
what
will be sewn there, which the second step in the 5W sewing profile, from that you will derermine how many
people will be needed to complete the jobs and what size space to accomodiate that work.
If you are starting from a home-based-business perhaps hiring a friend on a part time basis, will be sufficient for the time. As more jobs come you may consider hiring someone on a more permanent basis.
