Duvet Coverlet made with Upholstery Fabric

How do you solve the problem when your client wants a duvet coverlet made from upholstery fabric? You find a way to make it. This coverlet was a bit of a challenge until a friend shared with me how to make a duvet with vertical print.

The dilemma was, the client had purchased several yards of expensive fabric at a no-return shop. They had sold her upholstery fabric instead of drapery fabric.

The fabric print was running vertical instead of horizontal. What to do, especially when the bed is a King?

Fortunate for me the upholster fabric was 60" wide now this had be used as the length of the bed. So two widths of fabric was carefully sewn together I now had 119", the length of the bed.

Not enough for a pillow tuck but just enough to cover the flat mattress and 15" to hang at the bottom, or the drop.

Now, what do you do with the ugly seam going from one side of the bed to the other. Make a flat banding in the same fabric stitch down on both sides, cover buttons and sew every 6-8"across the width of the duvet and you have a "custom duvet coverlet". An original!

It may not be the typical Duvet but when presented with a problem, if you are a seamstress you must be ingenious, you will find a way.

"Miracles can happen in a window fabrication shop!"

Oh, yeah, the opening, I placed a zipper at the center of the duvet, lining side. I always like center openings or about 10" up from the bottom. You may insert the zipper on the top with a 2" flap for covering, if this is the case you may not want to add buttons.

It was a challenge and by golly we did it and we did several more. We were no longer limited to the print on the fabric. However, I would not recommend this for King, it could be a hair pulling experience.
