Steps To Make a Perfect Sheer Roman Shade
1. Supplies are critical when sewing with sheer fabric. Make sure your scissors are sharp, your needles are small size #8 or #9 should do, your cutting table has no nicks and your sewing machine needle is small, thin and new.
2. Squaring you fabric is critical. Even if your sheer fabric has no design, unevenness will be noticeable. I suggest the old pulling string. Catch holed of at least two threads and pull across the entire width of fabric. This will give you a straight grain to cut from.
Tip-Even if you shade is ballooned don't leave out this step it will make for a prettier fold.
3. Thread-use a thread compatible to the sheer, Light weight.
4. If adding several widths of fabric always use French seams.
A French seam-is made by placing wrong sides of the fabric together and making a small 1/4"seam, turn and finger press the seam. The right sides are together at this point; now, make a seam over the previous one encase the first seam; using as small a seam as possible to cover the raw edges.
Small seams are much prettier and will not show through the sheer as much and will give a cleaner appearance.
Tip-you may need to use a looser tension, it will prevent puckering of fabric.
If Pressing is required use a cool iron, test before on a scrap of fabric. Pressing should be kept to minimal.
5. Sew rings on by hand to prevent puckering. Sheer ring tape is availible, but use with caution.
You can increase rows of rings if sheer fabric is flimsy. Use your best judgement.
Tip-rings for side seams. If possible do not use iron on interfacing for sides I suggest hand hemming.
An Iron too hot can cause a disaster. If you choose to use iron on interfacing please proceed with caution and test first on a scrap of fabric.
Learning to sew with sheer fabric will be easy if take your time and follow all the steps. Exact sewing is essential if you want your shades to look professionally sewn.
